Dr. Stan and eight female chemistry students spent the day in Chicago learning about the job possibilities for a chemistry major in the food industry. From buying and selling the actual chemicals from the manufacturers to producing the flavors, to developing the food products to use the flavors to the challenges involved in manufacturing food products on a large scale chemistry is a great major to have for these jobs. We met with women business owners who are chemical distributors and dairy flavoring manufacturers to flavorists working at Kraft foods to bring you flavored cream cheese. Chemistry is an important part of so many of the jobs we learned about that the students were able to see a chemistry major as a path to many careers new to them.
