Students Present Research at the Midwest Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine

Twelve TU students and five faculty travelled to the annual Midwest meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday.  Julia Noonan, chemistry student, presented her research entitled "The Effect of Low and High - Activity Workdays on Blood Serum Levels of Leptin and Ghrelin".  Her work, in collaboration with Exercise Science student, Zach Ham, involved the collection of blood samples from subjects before and after a low-activity day (<1,000 steps) and a high-activity workday (>10,000 steps).  They processed the blood samples and performed ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests to quantify the blood serum concentrations of four hormones believed to be associated with the positive impacts of exercise.
